Deepfake Phone Scams

Deepfake phone scams are a rising form of fraud being reported locally. Please be cautious when answering unexpected calls asking for monetary compensation or private information as scam artists can generate voices that mimic individuals we trust.

What's a deepfake?

Deepfakes involve using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to manipulate existing video or audio recordings of a family member, friend, or colleague you perceive as trustworthy.

Common scam requests:

  • Money for an emergency such as needing a plane ticket to get home, bail, surgery, risk of eviction, or loss of utilities.
  • Sounding like a relative, asking for information to open a savings bond/account as a gift to them.
  • Sounding like someone famous asking for personal information to send a prize or lottery winnings.

Staying safe

When receiving unexpected calls, be careful and take the time to make sure the caller is really who they say they are. Even if the request seems urgent, try asking specific questions that help verify their identity or end the call and reach out to that person directly.
